I’ve been writing a weekly column for NZ regional newspapers since 1998. Columns produced since the start of 2011 are included on this page.

Last weekly newspaper column

Wednesday November 28th 2012

After 14 years writing a weekly column which has gone to a number of regional newspapers I have decided to concentrate my efforts on the Thursday night Weekly Overview and close this particular outlet down. So many thanks to regular readers and you can keep up to date with my latest analysis and sometimes random […]

Things Learnt

Wednesday November 28th 2012

Sorry for the delay in posting this week’s Overview. There were problems with the site. This week I take a look at some things I’ve learnt over the past few years which you might find interesting.

Labour Market Weak

Monday November 12th 2012

Last week we learnt that rather than holding steady at 6.8% New Zealand’s unemployment rate jumped to 7.3% courtesy largely of a 9,000 drop in employment during the September quarter. Does this result mean that our economy is back in recession?

Housing Market Firm – Though Not Everywhere

Friday November 9th 2012

The results from our latest monthly survey of licensed real estate agents around New Zealand show that perceived interest in buying from both investors and first home buyers has lifted over the past month. Interest in Open Homes remains strong, prices remain strongly perceived to be rising, but buyers are only marginally considered to be […]

Business Confidence Up Strongly

Monday November 5th 2012

Our latest BNZ Confidence Survey has found a lift in confidence about the state of the NZ economy in a year’s time to a net 38% optimistic. This is up from a net 20% optimistic in the October survey and the highest result since July 2011. In residential real estate a property shortage remains the […]

In this update we add three points regarding Family Planning, Viral Outbreaks, and Trade Barriers.

Stuck in London

Thursday October 25th 2012

Troy Flavel says hello – or at least he will later this week when like me he makes it back to New Zealand. He’s coming back for some media ahead of his Fight For Life bout with Willie Mason in December. I’m just trying to get home. Both of his caught a British Airways flight […]

Still Offshore

Wednesday October 17th 2012

I’m writing this week’s column shortly after giving a presentation at a KEA-organised function on the short term prospects for New Zealand’s economy to a group of almost 50 Kiwis and other interested people in the Ambassador’s Residence at the NZ Embassy in Paris. Questions form the audience showed strong interest in the issue of […]

BNZ-REINZ Residential Market Survey – October 2012

Saturday October 13th 2012

This month’s survey of over 10,000 licensed real estate agents throughout New Zealand has found continuing strong property demand from young buyers and investors, prices perceived to be rising, and sellers having the upper hand. None of the main measures we track has shown a particularly strong change over the month and this accords with […]

Europe Pressures Remain

Tuesday October 9th 2012

I am over in London again on my six monthly visit to get a feel for how things are and whether we can reasonably start feeling that the European debt crisis is reaching an end. It most definitely is not and this week we are likely to see various agencies revise downward their forecasts for […]
